Cornwall's sub-tropical gardens enjoy the warmth of the Gulf Stream and are home to an abundance of the most exciting, colourful, rare and beautiful plants and trees in the British Isles.

The creative genius of the early nineteenth-century Cornish garden owners led them to sponsor the great Victorian plant hunting expeditions. The seeds and plants which they brought back from all over the world helped create unique examples of wild and magnificent living specimens which continue to thrive to this day.

Eden Project

The giant biomes of the Eden Project in Cornwall were built in a disused clay mine near St Austell, transforming it into a rich, global garden where visitors can learn about nature and get inspiration about the world around them. With the tropical and mediterranean biomes showcasing plants of all countries, and the ongoing projects to encourage learning and responsibility for the environment, Eden is a great place to visit.

Caerhays Castle & Gardens 

Caerhays Castle, which is owned by the Williams family, is located in a sheltered valley overlooking Porthluney Cove on the South Cornish Coast equidistant from Truro and St Austell.

The surrounding parkland and woodland gardens were created in the main from the discoveries of the plant hunters in China shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Since then a great deal of hybridisation work and especially the creation of the first x williamsii camellias, has taken place at Caerhays to create the extensive woodland gardens which visitors can admire and enjoy today. Caerhays is very much a spring garden and is at its best in March, April and May. The garden is ONLY open at present for these complete 3 months (7 days a week). The castle, where the family still live is only open for more limited periods so please do check opening times carefully.

Glendurgan Garden - National Trust

The three valleys of Glendurgan Garden are full of fun, natural beauty and amazing plants. Discover giant rhubarb plants in the jungle-like lower valley and spiky arid plants basking in the sunny upper slopes. Wander through the garden down to the beautiful hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River: a place to watch birds and boats, skim stones and build sandcastles. Find a boat-seat, gigantic tulip trees and ponds teeming with wildlife.

Trelissick Gardens - National Trust

This modern garden was created within shelter belts planted 200 years ago. It is constantly evolving, with new planting and fresh ideas. Trelissick has seen trees grow to maturity, the tide ebbing and flowing, but has become a dynamic, forward-looking estate. The iconic Water Tower was built for irrigation and fire-control; now the lavatories are flushed with rainwater stored underground in modern reservoirs. Heat is extracted from kitchen appliances and the Sun to provide hot water and heating. The River Fal is now more than just a beautiful setting for Trelissick; many visitors arrive by boat each summer.
