Helston Flora Dance - May 8th 2012
Helston's Flora Day is one of those events.On Tuesday 8 May 2012 the historic town of Helston became a mass of colour for its annual Flora Day celebrations.
As the daylight began in Helston the action started. The gentlemen wore smart shirts and ties, and the ladies looked glamorous in their summer dresses. It was all for the first dance of the day, which officially launched the Flora Day celebrations.
The 7am dance was then followed by a more boisterous event which is a play called Hal-an-Tow. It pays tribute to the Spanish Armada, and colour characters like Robin Hood.
The popular Children's Dance started at 10.30am and all the local children dressed to the nines, decorated with flowers like blue bells and the famous lily of the valley.
The main dance of the day was held at midday. This is the formal dance of Flora Day, with the men wearing morning dress and ladies in their ball gowns and hats. The dance is always led by a couple who were born in the town.
During the day the main street of Coinagehall in the town centre was buzzing with many stalls selling local souvenirs, Cornish crafts, and food.
